The unit was first known as the “Flying Thirteen training at Camp Toccoa in Toccoa, Georgia Being known as the most unruly and undisciplined men they were sent to the care of Jake McNeice as their last chance to remain in the unit and the 506th Regiment. In effect, this allowed Jake, the inspirational leader of the most of the antics, to surround himself with men just like himself.

Later named the “Filthy Thirteen in England because they did not bath during the week, Colonel Robert Sink, the Regimental Commander, knew that these were the men he could count on to secure the only bridges in his sector of Normandy. Jake volunteered his section for the 3rd Battalion mission.

This print depicts the D-Day preparation of the Filthy Thirteen after they have painted their faces and shaved Mohawks scalps locks on their head and dawned their gear to load their C47. It was at this time that a photographer and cameraman walked up and immortalized the moment. The painstaking research and interviews, this painting depicts the minutest detail of what each man carried and how he carried it.
